Assessippi Park Trail System

Date - April 29, 2018
Length - 3 km
Time - 46 minutes

No AllTrails at this point yet, so no map again. We also forgot to take pictures while we were out.

This was a quick 3 km hike to get out and try out our trekking poles. Roslyn previously used both of hers at Minnewasta Lake, and I received mine about three days before this hike. The trail system is fairly new, with freshly cut brush down on the trail and pushed off to the side. The trail head starts near river level and we hiked to the top of the valley and back.

The trail is very steep and made up of soft dirt and decaying leaves, so slipping was an issue at some points. The view out across the valley was beautiful for April and we enjoyed getting out for a bit in the morning.

In Roslyn’s words:

This short but difficult hike was a very unexpected challenge. When we got to the trailhead it was labeled as difficult, but to us it looked liked it would just skirt the bottom of the valley. Well we were very wrong. This path instead we were presented with very steep inclines up the side of the valley. It was never so steep that we needed to use our hands to climb but it would be a treacherous walk if wet. It was a short hike, only 3 km return, but it definitely worked me hard. I would label this as the perfect morning kick in the butt to launch you into your day.

While we didn't do the entire trail system, the map shows the same type of terrain for most of it, so expect a fair amount of steep climbs where ever you are hiking it.
